Chapter 1 — He Handcuffed His Stepfdaughter—Then Five Black SUVs Arrived

4.9Editorial score

The front-door handle turned slowly.

Frank stared at it as though he could stop whoever was outside by refusing to breathe.

The secure satellite phone remained on the kitchen island.

Its speaker was still active, though no one on the line said another word.

The silence had changed.

Before, it had belonged to Frank.

Now it belonged to the people approaching the house.

The door opened.

The woman from the lead SUV entered first.

She wore a dark suit, a plain coat, and an expression that revealed nothing.

Two members of my security detail followed her.

They did not rush.

They did not draw weapons.

They simply looked at the room and understood it in seconds.

My wrist was cuffed to the chair.

Frank was standing over me in uniform.

Kyle held a phone at his side.

My mother was crying beside the stove.

The lead officer’s gaze moved to the satellite phone.

“General Voss?”

“I’m here.”

Frank opened his mouth.

She raised one hand without looking at him.

“Do not move.”

It was not shouted.

It did not need to be.

Frank’s posture changed immediately.

The authority he had spent years performing vanished when he encountered the real thing.

“I’m Lieutenant Frank Hale,” he said.

“This is my residence.

I detained her because she may be impersonating—”

“We heard your identification on the secure line.”

His eyes moved toward the phone.

The woman continued, “We also heard General Voss instruct you to remove your hand before you restrained her.”

Frank looked at me as if I had tricked him by allowing the call to remain connected.

“She never told me who she was.”

The lead officer finally faced him.

“You heard her addressed by rank.”

“That proves nothing.”

“It was a controlled government communication.”

Frank swallowed.

Kyle stepped backward until his shoulders touched the refrigerator.

My mother whispered, “Please take the cuffs off her.”

Frank reached toward his belt.

One of the security officers stepped between us.

“Slowly,” he said.

Frank removed the handcuff key with two fingers.

For the first time since entering the kitchen, his hands were not steady.

He tried to place the key on the island, but the lead officer stopped him.

“You will unlock the general yourself.”

Frank looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because you placed the restraints on her.”

The answer was simple, but I understood what she was doing.

Frank had used the cuffs to humiliate me in front of my mother and Kyle.

Now he would be made to reverse the act in front of witnesses.
