Chapter 1 — They Threatened the Colonel—Then Her Daughter’s Voicemail Began to Play

4.9Editorial score

The recording did not stop after Margaret said, “Take her phone.”

There was a scraping sound, Emily’s frightened breathing, and then Brandon’s voice, unmistakably close to the phone.

“Lock the guest house until she learns what leaving this family will cost.”

Emily cried out.

Something struck the floor.

Ethan said her name in a warning tone, and Margaret ordered him to end the call.

The final sound was Emily whispering, “Mom, please,” before the line went dead.

No one in the hospital room moved.

Margaret’s face remained composed, but one hand rose to the diamonds at her ear.

Ethan stared at my phone as though it had become a weapon.

Brandon’s careless smile vanished.

The police officer stopped the recording.

“Is that your voice, Mrs.

Prescott?”

Margaret recovered quickly.

“That recording has been manipulated.”

“It came directly from my phone,” I said.

Ethan pointed at me.

“She is a military intelligence officer.

She could fake anything.”

“I command a logistics unit,” I replied.

“And you should stop talking.”

The officer asked the Prescotts to remain in the corridor while Emily completed her statement.

Ethan refused.

“I am her husband.

I have a right to be here.”

The nurse stepped between him and the bed.

“She is an adult patient, and she has asked you to leave.”

Ethan looked past her at Emily.

“Tell them this is a misunderstanding.”

Emily’s fingers tightened around mine.

For years, she had been the kind of person who softened every disagreement.

She apologized when someone interrupted her.

She sent thank-you notes for gifts she did not like.

When Ethan embarrassed her at dinners, she waited until they were home to ask why.

That gentleness had taught the Prescotts a dangerous lesson.

They believed she would endure anything to avoid making a scene.

Emily lifted her head.

“I am not leaving with you.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You do not know what you are doing.”

“I know exactly what I am doing.”

The security officer guided him into the corridor.

Brandon followed after being warned twice.

Margaret remained near the doorway for one final moment.

“This will destroy her,” she told me quietly.

“The scrutiny.

The questions.

The things people will say about her.”

I closed the black folder.

“No,” I said.

“Silence was destroying her.”

The door shut behind Margaret.

Only then did Emily begin to cry.

I sat beside her while the officer took her statement.

I did not answer for her.
