Chapter 1 — Her Son’s Rare Blood Summoned the Father She Escaped

4.9Editorial score

“Once the baby is born, Elena becomes optional.”

Rafael’s recorded voice filled the hospital corridor with the same cold certainty it had carried seven years earlier.

No one moved.

The doctor standing outside Trauma Room Three stopped pulling off her gloves.

One of Rafael’s guards looked at him, then quickly looked away.

The suited representative who had dismissed Elena’s folder as old accusations lost his smile.

Rafael stared at the recorder in Elena’s hand.

“That proves nothing,” he said.

The machine continued playing.

A younger Elena could be heard asking, “What does optional mean?”

Then Rafael answered.

“It means the child will have my name, my protection, and my future.

Whether you remain part of that future will depend on how cooperative you are.”

A chair scraped somewhere behind Elena.

Rafael stepped toward her, but a hospital security officer moved between them.

“Sir, you need to proceed to the donor room.”

Rafael’s eyes stayed fixed on Elena.

“Turn that off.”

She did.

Not because he had ordered her to, but because Adrian’s monitor began shrilling behind the glass.

The doctor snapped back into motion.

“We need the donor now.”

Rafael looked at his son for a long second.

Adrian was nearly hidden beneath tubes, blankets, and the hands of the trauma team.

Only his hair and one small bare foot were visible.

Whatever Rafael had planned to say disappeared.

He handed his coat to a guard and followed the doctor.

Before the donor-room door closed, he looked back at Elena.

“This is not finished.”

“No,” she said.

“It finally started.”

The door shut between them.

Elena’s knees weakened, but she remained standing.

For seven years, she had imagined seeing Rafael again in grocery stores, parking lots, school corridors, and the dark reflection of her apartment windows.

In every version, she ran.

She had never imagined that she would be the one holding the evidence while he was trapped behind a hospital door by his own blood.

A nurse guided Elena to a chair.

“What happened between you two?” she asked softly.

Elena looked at the blue folder.

The simple answer was that she had loved Rafael once.

The true answer was more difficult.

They had met when Elena worked as an interpreter for a medical charity Rafael’s family funded.

He was attentive, disciplined, and almost unnervingly observant.

He remembered how she took her coffee.

He sent a car when it rained.

He noticed when she was tired before she admitted it herself.

At first, his attention felt like safety.

Then it became surveillance.

He wanted to know who called her.

He replaced her phone with one his staff could secure.

When she visited her sister, a driver waited outside.

When she objected, Rafael explained that his family had enemies and that precautions were necessary.

Each rule arrived disguised as concern.

By the time Elena understood what was happening, Rafael’s employees managed her travel, her accounts, and even the doctors she was permitted to see.

The pregnancy changed the shape of his control.

Elena had expected surprise, perhaps fear.
