Chapter 1 — She Hid Damian Cole’s Twins—Then He Found Her Door

4.9Editorial score

Damian Cole stood in Zara Williams’s doorway with a dark folder beneath one arm, but the folder stopped mattering the moment two toddlers appeared behind her.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The first child held the edge of Zara’s sweater.

The second stood slightly behind Gloria’s leg, studying the stranger at the door with solemn dark eyes.

Damian’s face changed.

Not dramatically.

Damian was a man who had spent most of his adult life learning how not to react when everyone else in a room was watching him.

But Zara saw it.

His jaw loosened.

His fingers tightened around the folder.

His gaze moved from one child to the other and returned to her.

“Zara,” he said quietly, “who are those children?”

Her mouth went dry.

For two years, she had imagined this moment in a hundred different forms.

In some versions, Damian was furious.

In others, he laughed in disbelief.

In the worst ones, he looked at the twins and saw a problem for his lawyers to solve.

She had never imagined him looking frightened.

“They’re mine,” she said.

Something almost painful crossed his eyes.

“That wasn’t what I asked.”

Gloria stepped closer to Zara, not between them exactly, but near enough to remind Damian that her daughter was not alone.

Zara inhaled.

“They’re yours too.”

The hallway seemed to become completely silent.

Damian looked at the children again.

Two years old.

He did the calculation instantly.

The wedding night.

The hotel suite.

The morning Zara vanished.

His voice dropped.

“Twins?”

Zara nodded.

He turned his face away for one second and pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek.

When he looked back, the businessman had returned, but only partially.

“May I come in?”

Zara almost said no.

Then one twin tugged at her sleeve and asked for water, completely unaware that the world had shifted at the front door.

Zara stepped aside.

Damian entered.

He did not look around with judgment, though Zara suddenly noticed everything about the apartment she usually ignored: the worn sofa, the stack of folded laundry, the secondhand dining table, the basket of toys beneath the window.

His attention remained on the children.

He crouched slowly, keeping several feet between himself and them.

Neither toddler approached.

Damian seemed to understand that he had no right to expect them to.

One of them hid behind Zara’s knee.

His expression tightened.

“They don’t know who I am.”

It was not a question.

“No.”

He stood.

That single word hurt him more than Zara expected.

Damian placed the folder on the dining table.

“What is that?” she asked.

“My search for you.”
