Chapter 1 — They Threw Her Out—Then Their Camera Kept Recording

4.9Editorial score

The video continued after the front door closed behind me.

For three silent seconds, nobody at the birthday table moved.

Then the version of my family they had tried to hide stepped into view.

On the conference-room screen, Mom lifted the retirement papers from the gravy and dabbed them with a napkin.

Ryan reached across the cake, pulled the black leather folder toward him, and opened it.

“Thirty-one million,” he said.

The present-day Ryan stopped checking his watch.

On the recording, Brooke turned sharply toward him.

“Keep your voice down.”

“Why? She’s gone.”

Ryan flipped through the pages, scanning the valuation summary my financial team had included to establish the source of the funds.

Dad remained standing at the head of the table, still breathing hard from shouting at me.

Mom looked toward the empty doorway.

“Richard, you went too far.”

Dad picked up his fork and cut another piece of birthday cake.

“She needed to be put in her place.”

“You told her never to come back.”

“She’ll come back,” he said.

“She always does.”

Nobody in the conference room looked at me.

The camera’s microphone had captured every syllable.

Ryan leaned closer to the folder.

“This medical reserve alone is more than Dad’s house is worth.”

Brooke took the papers from him.

“It isn’t effective unless they accept and sign.”

Dad looked at her.

“Then give me a pen.”

Brooke hesitated.

“You just threw her out.”

“I threw her out of my house.

I didn’t reject the money.”

The conference room became so still that I could hear the laptop fan.

Across the table, Dad’s attorney slowly removed his glasses.

My father had spent three weeks claiming that I had ambushed him with unwanted money and attempted to control him.

Now his own camera showed him trying to accept the same money less than one minute after banishing me.

But the recording was not finished.

Mom sat down and pressed both hands against her temples.

“She paid for my surgery,” she whispered.

Dad shrugged.

“Apparently.”

“You knew,” Ryan said.

Mom looked at him.

“I recognized the trust name when the hospital sent the final statement.

I didn’t know at first, but I knew later.”

Brooke’s face tightened.

“Mom, stop talking.”

“Why?”

“Because we need to be precise about what everyone knew.”

On the other side of the conference table, my mother closed her eyes.

The demand letter Brooke had drafted said my parents had remained completely unaware of the source of the payments until the birthday dinner.

The camera had just proved that statement false.

Ryan gave a nervous laugh on-screen.

“We all knew something.

I traced the house-closing transfer months ago.

The title company wouldn’t tell me much, but the trust used the same business address as Emily’s company.”

Dad frowned.
