Chapter 1 — Her Husband Raised the Stick—Then the Front Gate Unlocked

4.9Editorial score

The front gate unlocked with a heavy metallic click.

Ryan stopped moving.

For one suspended second, the kitchen held only the low hum of the refrigerator and Emily’s careful breathing.

Then three pairs of headlights swept across the hallway walls.

Vanessa lowered Emily’s mug.

Ryan turned toward the security screen beside the pantry.

The image was grainy, but the three men walking up the driveway needed no introduction.

Alexander came first, tall and composed in a charcoal overcoat, his expression unreadable.

Grant walked at his right shoulder carrying a slim black folder beneath one arm.

Noah followed with his phone in one hand and his eyes fixed on its screen.

All three were chief executives.

All three were accustomed to entering rooms where powerful people expected to be obeyed.

But that night, they were not approaching a boardroom.

They were approaching their pregnant sister’s home after watching her husband raise a broken stick beside her body.

Ryan’s fingers loosened.

The broom handle struck the tile.

Vanessa flinched at the sound.

“How did they get through the gate?” Ryan demanded.

Emily’s thumb rested on the hidden button inside her sleeve.

“I opened it.”

Ryan stared at her.

“You said you didn’t press anything.”

“I never said that.”

The doorbell did not ring.

Alexander entered using the emergency access code Emily had given him three weeks earlier.

The front door opened, closed, and locked again.

The brothers appeared at the kitchen entrance without rushing.

Their stillness frightened Ryan more than shouting would have.

Alexander’s gaze moved first to Emily’s cheek, then to the cut near her temple, then to the broken handle on the floor.

His jaw tightened once.

Grant looked at Vanessa in Emily’s robe and then at the mug in her hand.

Noah looked only at the baby monitor.

The red light remained solid.

“Emily,” Alexander said, “are you in immediate danger?”

Ryan stepped forward before she could answer.

“This is a private marital argument.

You’re trespassing.”

Alexander did not look at him.

“Emily?”

She kept one hand beneath her belly.

“I’m standing.

The baby is moving.

He struck beside my ribs and shoved me into the cabinet.”

Ryan pointed at her.

“She slipped.”

Noah lifted his phone slightly.

“No, she didn’t.”

Ryan’s eyes shifted to the device.

Noah tapped the screen, and Ryan’s own voice filled the kitchen.

Vanessa stays.

You leave.

The recording was clear enough to capture the scrape of the broom handle against the island.

Then came Emily’s warning.

Ryan, you should stop now.

Then Ryan’s laugh.

Then the impact.
