Chapter 4 — Her Husband Raised the Stick—Then the Front Gate Unlocked

4.9Editorial score

“You set me up,” he told Emily.

“No,” she replied.

“I gave you chances to stop.”

“You kept provoking me.”

“I asked you not to raise a stick against your pregnant wife.”

The simplicity of the sentence silenced the room.

Ryan searched for another explanation.

He looked at the baby monitor, the folder, Vanessa, and the three brothers standing between him and the life he had pretended to control.

Then he tried one last version of the truth.

“She wanted this,” he said.

“She wanted evidence.

She wanted me angry.”

Noah’s phone continued recording.

Alexander’s voice became colder.

“Did she make you pick up the handle?”

Ryan said nothing.

“Did she make you swing it?”

Silence.

“Did she make you forge her name?”

Ryan’s breathing grew louder.

Vanessa moved toward the hallway.

Ryan caught her wrist.

“Don’t leave.”

She pulled away.

The baby monitor captured that too.

Two police vehicles stopped beyond the front windows.

Their lights painted the ceiling blue and red without sound for several seconds.

Ryan looked at Emily one final time.

“You’re really going to let them take your husband?”

The question was meant to wound her.

It carried the old demand that she protect his reputation, absorb his choices, and confuse loyalty with silence.

Emily thought of every dinner where she had explained his absence.

Every investor call where she had reassured people because he asked her to.

Every apology she had accepted because he cried only after consequences appeared.

Then her son moved again beneath her palm.

“I’m going to let the truth leave this kitchen,” she said.

The officers entered moments later.

Emily answered their questions without embellishment.

Noah provided the recording.

Grant handed over copies of the forged documents after confirming the originals were secured elsewhere.

Alexander remained near Emily but never spoke for her unless she asked.

Ryan interrupted repeatedly.

He said the handle had already been broken.

He said the blow had been aimed at the island.

He said Emily exaggerated the shove.

He said Vanessa had manipulated him.

Each explanation contradicted the one before it.

Vanessa, now wearing her own clothes beneath a borrowed coat, told the officers Ryan had promised Emily would be removed from the house that night.

She admitted receiving payments through the consulting account but insisted Ryan had described them as legitimate compensation.

When an officer asked what work she had performed, Vanessa could not name a single client, campaign, or completed project.

Ryan’s expression changed from outrage to panic.

He accused everyone of conspiring against him.

Then the baby monitor recording played again.

His own voice ended the argument.

Before leaving, a paramedic examined Emily.

Her blood pressure was elevated, and the cut near her temple needed cleaning, but the baby’s heartbeat remained strong.
