Marco left without answering.
The door closed.
Nobody applauded.
That would have turned Connor into a performance again.
Instead, the room slowly began to breathe.
Leo looked at the dance floor.
“Were you dancing?”
Connor glanced at Maya.
“Four steps.”
“I interrupted.”
Connor nodded.
Leo almost smiled, then seemed unsure whether he had earned the right.
“Then I won’t interrupt again.”
He returned to the head table, but he didn’t sit immediately.
He moved Connor’s unused place setting away from the crowded center and placed it at the quieter end, leaving space around the chair.
Then he waited.
Connor looked at the new seat.
He didn’t go to it.
Not yet.
Instead he turned back to Maya.
“Four?”
She offered her hand again.
“Four.”
This time Connor reached for it without looking at anyone else.
One step sideways.
One back.
One forward.
One pause.
The pianist followed them.
After several measures, Connor began correcting Maya.
“Too fast.”
She laughed softly.
“You’re right.”
“Again.”
They started over.
Leo watched from the head table.
Maya expected pride on his face.
What she saw instead was regret.
Not dramatic regret.
Not the kind that erased twenty-three years in a single evening.
The quieter kind that comes when a person realizes love and understanding are not the same thing.
Leo clearly loved his son.
But he had spent years confusing protection with control.
He had decided what Connor could tolerate, what Connor wanted, what Connor understood and where Connor belonged.
Maya had done something more difficult.
She had watched.
Then she had asked.
Later, when most of the guests had left, Connor sat at the quieter end of Leo’s table with a glass of water wrapped in a napkin.
The amber lamp remained on across the room.
Leo sat two seats away instead of beside him.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Maya was clearing plates when she heard Leo say, “Can I ask you something?”
Connor looked at him.
Leo seemed almost uncomfortable.
For a man accustomed to giving orders, permission was unfamiliar territory.
“Do you hate coming here?”
