Chapter 6 — Grandma Cut His Curls—Then His Sister Saw What Was Left

Lily and Leo were sitting together.

She had taken out the surviving curl and was holding it beside one of the new curls growing near his neck.

“The new one’s almost the same color,” she said.

Leo grinned.

“This time nobody cuts it until I say.”

I looked at Mark.

He smiled, but his eyes were wet.

That was when I finally understood why that awful Thursday had stayed with all of us.

Brenda thought she had cut hair.

Leo thought, for a few terrible hours, that she had cut his promise.

But promises like his are not stored in curls.

They are stored in the choice behind them.

His hair could grow again.

Trust could be rebuilt only slowly.

Lily could continue healing one difficult day at a time.

And Leo could learn something I wished he had never been forced to learn so young: loving someone does not give them ownership over your boundaries.

The last curl from that first attempt still sits inside its little envelope.

We never threw it away.

Not because it represents what Brenda took from him.

Because when Leo looks at it now, he remembers what Lily told him on the worst day.

Grandma could cut his hair.

She could not cut away the reason he had grown it.
