Every time Eleanor had been called mature because being mature was cheaper than helping her.
She chose not to.
“This stops with my daughter,” she said.
Then she hung up.
Leo’s call came next.
Unlike Heather, he did not begin with anger.
“Hey,” he said cautiously.
“Mom says you canceled everything.”
“I did.”
“Including mine?”
“Yes.”
There was a pause.
“Okay.”
Eleanor had expected a fight.
Instead Leo sighed.
“I probably should’ve known this couldn’t go on forever.”
The admission surprised her.
Then he added, “But maybe give Mom and Dad some notice? They’re freaking out.”
Eleanor thought about Mia at the table.
“Did they give Mia notice before telling her she could lose her place in the family?”
Leo went quiet.
“No,” he finally said.
“Did you know about the hundred dollars?”
“I knew they were collecting for Sophie.
I didn’t know Mom said that to Mia.”
“She did.”
“That’s messed up.”
It was the first sentence from anyone in her family that acknowledged the obvious without defending it.
Eleanor felt some of the tension leave her shoulders.
“Yeah,” she said.
“It is.”
Leo did not ask her to restore his payment after that.
By midday, the family group chat had changed tone.
The outrage had burned down into bargaining.
Her father wrote that perhaps everyone had reacted emotionally.
Heather suggested they could forget the horse camp contribution and still have Mia attend the birthday.
Her mother said she was willing to talk if Eleanor stopped being punitive.
Eleanor read each message without replying.
Thomas looked over her shoulder.
“They still want to negotiate around what she said.”
“I know.”
“What do you want?”
That question stopped Eleanor.
For years, she had thought mostly about what everyone else needed.
Her parents needed help with the mortgage.
Heather needed a top-up.
Leo needed support.
The children needed things.
Her own wants were whatever remained after the transfers cleared.
Now she knew exactly what she wanted.
“I want Mia to know this never happens again.”
That evening, Eleanor finally answered the group chat.
The transfers will remain canceled.
Mia will not attend the birthday.
