Chapter 4 — He Abandoned Five Newborns—Thirty Years Later, Their Mother Opened the Hospital File

4.9Editorial score

There were five bicycles lined against a narrow fence.

There were spelling tests taped to the refrigerator.

There were kitchen-table debates so loud the neighbors could probably follow them through the wall.

There were graduations.

Jobs.

Broken hearts.

Recoveries.

There was an entire family life Benjamin had declared counterfeit before it began.

Simone took out another photograph.

Then another.

She did not do it to punish him.

That was what made it worse.

She was showing him evidence of time.

Thirty years could not be argued with.

Benjamin looked at a photograph of the five siblings standing together as young adults.

“I didn’t know,” he said.

One son answered quietly.

“You didn’t want to know.”

Benjamin closed his eyes.

The room remained silent.

Eventually he looked at me.

“What do you want?”

I had heard that question in different forms from Whitmore lawyers for years.

How much money?

What settlement?

What would make me go away?

So I understood what Benjamin was really asking.

“Nothing,” I said.

His brow furrowed.

“Nothing?”

“I didn’t ask you here for money.”

“Then why am I here?”

I looked at our children.

“Ask them.”

Benjamin turned toward Simone.

She folded her hands on the table.

“We wanted you to see the reports.”

“You could have mailed them.”

“Yes.”

“Then why make me come here?”

“Because you left before the answer arrived the first time.”

Benjamin went still.

Simone’s voice remained controlled.

“We wanted to make sure you stayed in the room this time.”

No one moved.

That sentence seemed to strip away the last defense he had brought with him.

He looked again at the five reports.

“I thought I was the one who had been humiliated,” he said.

I felt something cold move through me.

“You were embarrassed for a few minutes because your children did not look the way you expected.

I was recovering from surgery while my husband accused me of betrayal in front of hospital staff and walked away from five newborns.”

His face reddened.

“I was in shock.”

“So was I.”

“My mother—”

“Was not married to me.”
