Chapter 5 — He Abandoned His Wife—Then Saw Who Walked Into the Gala With Her

4.9Editorial score

Told my mother he was busy.

Told coworkers he was protective.

Told myself his control meant he cared.

I closed the folder.

“I’m leaving now.”

He reached for my wrist.

Thomas moved instantly between us.

Derek stopped before touching me.

Catherine’s voice remained calm.

“Do not make another poor decision in a room full of witnesses.”

Derek lowered his hand.

His face burned red.

“You’ll regret humiliating me like this,” he said.

I looked at the shattered champagne glass still being swept from the floor behind him.

“You left me at a bus stop with no money and no phone.

You weren’t embarrassed when you thought nobody important was watching.”

Catherine’s mouth curved slightly.

We left together.

Outside, the night air felt cold against my shoulders, but I wasn’t shaking.

In the car, I expected to feel victorious.

I didn’t.

I felt exhausted.

Then grief arrived.

Not because I wanted Derek back.

Because I finally understood how long I had been disappearing inside my own marriage.

Catherine seemed to understand without asking.

She reached across the seat and placed her hand over mine.

“Freedom is not always loud,” she said.

“Sometimes it begins when you stop explaining why you deserve ordinary kindness.”

The following weeks were far less glamorous than the gala.

There were meetings with lawyers.

Account statements.

Password changes.

Forms.

Lists of property.

Copies of pay records from the library.

Conversations with my mother that ended with both of us crying.

Derek called repeatedly at first.

His messages changed by the day.

Apologies.

Accusations.

Promises.

Then anger.

He said Catherine had manipulated me.

He said Brenda meant nothing.

He said the money belonged to both of us, so he had every right to spend it.

He said I was destroying our marriage over a misunderstanding.

I stopped answering directly and sent everything through my lawyer.

Once I did, his power became strangely ordinary.

Words on a screen.

Claims requiring evidence.

Numbers that could be checked.

He could no longer end every disagreement by simply being louder.

Brenda eventually provided records of her own.

Messages from Derek describing himself as effectively separated.

Reservations he had arranged.
