An intravenous line ran into her hand.
Nathan stared at her.
For one second, he looked less angry than confused.
“Claire?”
She met his eyes through the camera.
“Good morning, Nathan.”
Patricia recovered first.
“How dare you involve yourself in company business after what you did to Vanessa?”
Claire did not answer her.
Arthur turned toward the screen and inclined his head with the respect Nathan had demanded from people his entire life but had never truly earned.
“Miss Charlotte Kingsley, all directors are present.”
The boardroom became silent.
Nathan’s mouth opened, but no sound emerged.
Vanessa took one step away from him.
He caught her wrist.
“Stay.”
Her eyes remained fixed on the screen.
“Charlotte Kingsley?”
Claire’s expression was calm.
“That is my legal name.
Claire Bennett was my mother’s maiden name.
I used it because I wanted one part of my life that did not begin with people calculating what I was worth.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.
The Kingsleys are old New York money.
Their daughter disappeared years ago.”
“I married you.”
“You told me you had no family.”
“I told you I had no family I could rely on.
At the time, that felt true.”
Arthur placed a sealed authorization beside the ownership chart.
“Miss Kingsley is the sole heir and current beneficiary of the trust.
Following last night’s events, she exercised her contractual authority to remove management whose conduct threatens trust assets.”
Nathan finally sat, though no chair had been offered to Vanessa or Patricia.
“Last night was a private marital dispute.
It has nothing to do with the company.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“You ordered two employees to break my ribs in a house my family owns.
Then you wrote a forty-million-dollar check against a company account controlled by my family and threatened to use this company’s influence to silence me.
You made it company business.”
A murmur moved around the table.
Nathan looked toward the directors.
“She attacked Vanessa.
There were witnesses.”
“There were cameras,” Claire said.
Vanessa’s face changed.
It was only a flicker, but Arthur saw it.
“The security system was disabled,” she said quickly.
“Nathan told me it was being repaired.”
Arthur opened a smaller folder.
“The visible system was disabled.
The property owner maintains an encrypted off-site archive.”
Vanessa released a breath that sounded like a sob.
“This is insane.
I fell.
Claire pushed me.”
