I did not scream.
I did not beg him to choose me.
I did not defend my worth to a room that had already decided I was entertaining enough to mock.
I simply stopped doing the work that allowed Evan to mistake dependence for superiority.
For a long time, I had believed strength meant being able to carry more.
More responsibility.
More stress.
More forgiveness.
More of someone else’s weight.
That night taught me something different.
Sometimes strength is recognizing which burden was never yours to keep carrying.
Evan called me pathetic because he saw the reminders, the lists, the caution, and the constant attention to details.
He never understood that those things were the architecture holding up the comfortable life he enjoyed.
By the time he understood, the ring was already off my finger.
And for once, I left him to fix his own mess.
