Chapter 1 — He Found His Own Eyes in the Son His Ex-Wife Hid

Dominic stared at the first page inside the blue folder until the words blurred.

Grace remained on the opposite side of the kitchen table, one hand wrapped around a mug she had stopped drinking from minutes ago.

Neither of them spoke.

Upstairs, something wooden clattered across the floor.

Then Noah laughed.

That small, ordinary sound made the paper in Dominic’s hand feel impossibly heavy.

The page was a copy of a medical record dated months after the divorce proceedings had begun.

Grace’s name appeared at the top.

Beneath it was a date Dominic knew instantly mattered.

He calculated backward without meaning to.

His eyes lifted.

Grace did not look away.

“There’s more,” she said.

Dominic turned the page.

A hospital discharge record.

Another date.

Then a copy of Noah’s birth certificate.

Grace Miller listed as mother.

The space for the father had been left blank.

Dominic’s thumb stopped against the edge of the paper.

“You left it empty.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You know why.”

“No.” His voice remained controlled, which was more frightening than shouting would have been.

“I know what I believed seven years ago.

I’m asking what happened.”

Grace gave a short, humorless breath.

“That may be the first time you’ve ever asked me that.”

The sentence landed cleanly.

Dominic lowered his eyes to the folder again.

There was no accusation in the documents.

No dramatic confession.

Just dates, appointments, measurements, ordinary evidence of a pregnancy he had never known existed.

Then he found an envelope.

It was yellowed slightly at the edges.

His name was written across the front in Grace’s handwriting.

DOMINIC.

Nothing else.

He looked at her.

“What is this?”

“The letter I wrote after I found out.”

“You never sent it.”

“No.”

His jaw flexed.

“You decided I didn’t deserve to know.”

Grace’s mug touched the table with a soft click.

“I decided I wasn’t going to beg you to listen again.”

Dominic leaned back slowly.

For seven years he had preserved one version of their ending because it had been easier to survive.

Grace had left him.

Grace had humiliated him.

Grace had chosen a life without him.

He had repeated those facts until they became armor.

But there had always been another fact beneath them.

Before she left, Grace had tried to talk to him.
