I’m awake.
You can come in.
One message after another, each one ordinary enough by itself and horrifying when seen together.
His sister covered her mouth.
His mother didn’t move.
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Claire, seriously? You’re showing everybody our private texts?”
I pulled the phone against my chest.
That sentence did something to me.
For weeks, I had been ashamed of what was happening.
I had worried that telling anyone would embarrass Daniel, damage our marriage, or make people think I had somehow allowed myself to be treated this way.
But standing there, I finally understood who shame had been protecting.
Not me.
Him.
“You weren’t worried about privacy when you locked the apartment door behind me,” I said.
His face changed.
He opened his mouth, but his mother raised one hand.
“Enough.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Mom, you don’t understand.
I have responsibilities.
People depend on me at work.”
His mother’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s interesting.”
She reached into the pocket of her robe and pulled out her phone.
Daniel went still.
I remembered what she had told me downstairs.
She had already called the one person Daniel feared disappointing more than almost anyone.
His boss.
“Mom.” Daniel’s voice dropped.
“What did you do?”
“I called Martin.”
Daniel took a step toward her.
“You called my boss in the middle of the night?”
“I called him because you kept using your job as justification for putting your wife and unborn child in a parking lot.”
“That could ruin my career.”
His mother gave a short, disbelieving shake of her head.
“You are standing in front of your pregnant wife worried that the truth might embarrass you at work.”
Daniel’s sister looked away.
His uncle exhaled sharply through his nose.
Daniel turned on me.
“Did you ask her to do this?”
“No.”
It was the first answer I had given all night without hesitating.
“I didn’t even know she was coming.”
His mother tapped the phone screen and placed it on the kitchen counter.
A man’s tired voice came through the speaker.
“Daniel?”
Daniel’s shoulders dropped.
“Martin.”
His boss sounded fully awake now.
“Your mother told me enough that I wanted to hear from you directly.”
Daniel looked furious, humiliated, trapped.
“This is a family disagreement.”
Martin paused.
“Did you tell Claire she had to sleep in her car because you needed rest for work?”
