His attorney looked at him.
Marcus said nothing.
The judge directed that the recording be played from the court’s equipment after the appropriate foundation was established.
The screen remained blank.
There was no video, only sound.
My voice came first.
I told Marcus I would review the agreement after receiving complete account statements.
Then his voice filled the courtroom.
No one will care about a few marks.
Sign it, take the money, and keep your mouth shut.
There was a pause on the recording.
My recorded voice asked, “And if I don’t?”
Marcus answered.
Then I’ll make sure everyone knows how unstable you are.
The clip ended.
No one moved.
Denise lowered her eyes.
Marcus’s attorney removed his glasses and placed them carefully on the table.
Marcus stared at the speaker as though the machine had betrayed him.
“That was edited,” he said.
I had expected that.
“The original file is available,” I told the judge.
“It has not been cut or altered.
I also preserved the full recording, including the minutes before and after that exchange.”
Marcus’s attorney asked for another recess.
This time, the judge refused.
She called Denise as a witness.
Denise walked forward slowly, no longer looking like a woman attending a celebration.
After taking the oath, she sat with her handbag in her lap and answered the attorney’s questions.
She said Marcus had always been a gentle son.
She said I was emotional.
She said she had never seen him hurt me.
When it was my turn, I approached with the printed messages.
“Mrs.
Vale, were you present inside our home during the incidents you told people I invented?”
“No.”
“Did you personally witness me injure myself?”
“No.”
“Did I ever tell you Marcus had hurt me?”
She hesitated.
“You made accusations.”
“Did I tell you?”
“Yes.”
“What did you advise me to do?”
She looked at Marcus.
The judge instructed her to answer.
“I said marriage was difficult.”
I showed her a message she had sent me after a family dinner.
Next time, wear sleeves.
People notice things, and it embarrasses Marcus.
Denise read it in silence.
“Did you send that?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“You noticed the marks?”
“I noticed something.”
“And your concern was that they embarrassed Marcus?”
