Chapter 3 — He Paid Me $120 Million to Vanish—Then I Returned With Four Children

4.9Editorial score

I had left the building before Colton returned from a business trip overseas.

By the time Colton tried reaching me, my number had changed, my apartment had been emptied, and the agreement I had signed restricted direct contact through the transition period.

I had believed Walter’s implication that Colton had chosen the family over me.

Colton, I would later learn, had been told something equally cruel: that I had demanded money, signed without hesitation, and left because I never loved him enough to stay.

Two lies built from the same signatures.

Walter had not forged the papers.

He had done something more careful.

He had manipulated two people into believing they had been abandoned by each other.

Colton’s voice broke slightly.

“You were pregnant when you left?”

I nodded.

“I found out days before that meeting.”

“With four?”

“I knew I was pregnant.

I didn’t know it was quadruplets until later.”

He closed his eyes.

Five years of birthdays, first steps, fevers, lost teeth, bedtime stories, and questions about their father seemed to pass across his face in seconds.

One of my sons looked up at me.

“Mom?”

I crouched beside him.

“You’re okay.”

Colton watched us, frozen.

Walter recovered enough to point at the portfolio.

“This spectacle has nothing to do with the children.

You came here to humiliate us because of that company.”

I stood.

“No.

The company is why you can’t dismiss me the way you did before.”

His eyes narrowed.

I removed another document from the folder.

This one was not readable from a distance, but Leonard recognized the seal.

His face tightened.

“What is that?” Walter demanded.

“Acknowledgment of funds and investment history.”

Walter looked confused.

I reminded him.

“You told me one hundred and twenty million dollars was more than enough for someone like me.”

A few guests exchanged glances.

“I kept the check,” I said.

“And after the divorce was finalized, I used part of the settlement to fund the first development stage of Bennett Quantum Systems.”

Walter’s eyes hardened.

“You built that company with Hayes money.”

“No.”

Daniel answered before I could.

“The settlement became Ms.

Bennett’s property the moment the agreement was executed.

Hayes Global holds no equity, no intellectual property rights, no board seat, no repayment claim, and no beneficial ownership.”

Walter looked at me.

I almost smiled.

The money he had used to make me disappear had become one small piece of the foundation beneath an empire he could not touch.

But the company had never been the secret that frightened him most.

The children were.

Colton stepped closer.

“Are you certain they’re mine?”

His words were careful, almost ashamed.

I understood why he had to ask.
