The black folder opened with a soft crack that somehow sounded louder than the chandeliers humming above them.
Julian Vance stared at the first page.
He couldn’t read every line from where he stood, but he recognized the Vance crest printed in the corner.
He recognized the name of the family holding company.
Most of all, he recognized the thick stack of signature pages underneath.
His father had signed.
Two Vance trustees had signed.
Family counsel had signed.
The only empty line was at the bottom of the final page.
Samuel’s.
Julian’s eyes lifted slowly.
“What is that?”
Samuel closed the folder halfway.
White frosting still covered one side of his face.
A crushed sugar rose clung absurdly to the shoulder of his black vest.
Yet no one in the ballroom was looking at him like a servant anymore.
The resort director stood beside him with the rigid posture of a man trying not to reveal just how disastrous the last ninety seconds had become.
“Mr.
Vance,” the director said carefully, “perhaps we should move this conversation somewhere private.”
Julian snapped toward him.
“I didn’t ask you.
I asked him.”
Samuel studied Julian for a moment.
“You were very interested in my career a minute ago.”
A few guests lowered their eyes.
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“Who are you?”
Samuel looked at the damaged cake, then at the frosting on his hand.
“The man whose approval your family has spent six months trying to obtain.”
The words landed without drama.
That made them worse.
Julian looked toward the front tables.
The hedge-fund managers who had been watching his performance were no longer amused.
One leaned toward another and whispered something behind his hand.
An older Vance relative stared down at the tablecloth.
Vanessa remained beside the stage, pale and motionless.
“Approval for what?” Julian demanded.
Samuel opened the folder completely and turned it around.
This time Julian could see enough.
The documents concerned the refinancing of the Vance family’s most heavily leveraged companies.
For years, the dynasty had projected strength: luxury properties, logistics holdings, commercial developments, private investments.
From the outside, the portfolio looked enormous.
Inside, it was carrying dangerous amounts of debt.
Several loans were approaching renewal.
Two major lenders wanted reduced exposure.
A planned asset sale had fallen apart.
The Vances needed fresh capital before the next round of obligations came due.
Samuel controlled the investment group prepared to provide it.
Not one of the men Julian had been trying to impress all evening.
Samuel.
Julian looked from the papers to the black vest.
“That’s impossible.”
Samuel’s expression didn’t change.
“Why?”
“Because you’re—”
Julian stopped.
