Vincent stared at the sealed envelope as if Claire had placed something far more dangerous than paper in front of him.
For several seconds, nobody in the conference room spoke.
The gray Manhattan afternoon pressed against the glass walls.
Mr.
Ellis sat beside Claire with both hands folded calmly over his legal pad.
Vincent’s attorney had stopped pretending to review the divorce agreement.
Dominic Russo remained near the door, watching Vincent with the careful attention of a man who knew exactly how much damage his boss could do when emotion outran judgment.
Vincent looked again at the handwritten name beneath the seal.
His own.
Vincent Moretti.
He broke the envelope open.
Inside were three things.
A copy of Claire’s pregnancy confirmation from the Boston clinic.
A recent ultrasound image.
And a short legal document prepared by Mr.
Ellis.
Vincent picked up the ultrasound first.
His fingers, which Claire had never once seen tremble, shook.
The image was grainy and small.
To anyone else it might have looked like gray shadows.
Vincent stared as if he could already see a face.
“That’s the baby?”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
His eyes moved to the date printed on the report.
He calculated silently.
Then he looked at her.
“Mine.”
It wasn’t a question anymore.
Claire held his gaze.
“Yes.”
The word broke something in him.
Vincent lowered his head.
For one extraordinary moment, the most feared man Claire had ever known sat in complete silence with an ultrasound photograph between his hands.
Dominic turned his face toward the window.
Vincent’s lawyer removed his glasses.
Claire had expected anger.
She had prepared herself for accusations, threats, demands for doctors, tests, proof.
Instead Vincent whispered, “I missed seven months.”
Claire did not soften.
“You missed six.
I didn’t know for the first one either.”
His eyes lifted.
“Why didn’t you call me when you found out?”
“Because I didn’t know which Vincent would answer.”
He frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“The man I married? Or the man behind the locked study door?”
Vincent’s expression hardened instinctively.
Claire saw the armor returning and felt the old exhaustion rise inside her.
“There,” she said quietly.
“That.
That’s why.”
He looked confused.
“Every time I get close to something you don’t want to discuss, you become someone I can’t reach.”
“There are things I cannot tell you.”
