Chapter 2 — He Told Me to Hide the Bruises Before His Mother Arrived

4.9Editorial score

The house Adrian had spent six years calling his was not his.

Not legally.

The property had been purchased through a family trust created by my late father before Adrian and I married.

The title had always remained under that trust.

Adrian knew my father had helped us buy the house, but he had never bothered to learn how ownership had been structured.

He had assumed possession meant control.

He had assumed my quietness meant ignorance.

Marjorie leaned forward.

“What am I looking at?”

Adrian grabbed the top page.

“Nothing.”

I let him take it.

That surprised him.

He scanned the page once.

Then again.

“This doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means the house isn’t yours.”

Marjorie laughed.

“Don’t be ridiculous.

My son pays for this house.”

“He pays part of the household expenses.

He does not own the property.”

Adrian threw the page onto the table.

“You think this changes anything? We’re married.”

“That’s why there are more pages.”

His face tightened.

The doorbell rang again.

Marjorie looked toward the hallway.

“Are you expecting someone?”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s eyes snapped to mine.

“Who?”

I stood.

For the first time since the previous night, he moved out of my way without being asked.

At the door stood Elena Morris, my attorney.

She wore a navy suit and carried a leather case.

Behind her was Daniel Reed, the investigator who had spent six weeks documenting what Adrian thought no one could see.

Adrian’s face changed.

“What is this?”

Elena looked at me, not him.

“Are you safe right now?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want us inside?”

“Yes.”

That distinction mattered.

My invitation.

My home.

My decision.

I stepped aside.

Adrian raised a hand.

“No.

They need to leave.”

Elena entered anyway after I invited her.

Daniel followed.

Marjorie stood.

“Adrian, who are these people?”
