Ryan looked toward the door.
A dark sedan had stopped behind his car, followed by a marked police vehicle.
My attorney stepped from the first car carrying a slim briefcase.
Two officers exited the second.
Ryan backed away from the table.
“You called the police over paperwork?”
“No,” I said.
“I called them because you hit me.”
His gaze moved to my face as if he were seeing the bruises for the first time.
Then he looked at the bathroom hallway.
The cameras.
He remembered them.
His voice dropped.
“Ava, we should discuss this privately.”
“We were private last night.”
“You were hysterical.”
“I said your mother could not move into my house.”
“You were screaming.”
“I recorded the entire conversation.”
Ryan stopped speaking.
The officers entered after my attorney.
She came directly to my side without touching me, allowing me to decide how much support I wanted in that moment.
One officer asked Ryan to step away from the table.
He tried to smile.
“This is a family dispute.
My wife fell last night, and now she’s angry because my mother planned to stay with us.”
The officer’s expression did not change.
“We have received video footage from the residence.”
Ryan’s smile collapsed.
Victoria picked up her suitcase handle.
“I have nothing to do with whatever happened between them.”
My attorney opened her briefcase.
“You may want to remain available, Mrs.
Hale.”
Victoria turned sharply.
“Why?”
An emergency order lay inside the briefcase.
The judge had authorized a temporary freeze on the accounts associated with Victoria’s company while the disputed transfers were investigated.
The preparation had begun weeks earlier.
My attorney had already collected bank statements, invoices, computer records and signature comparisons.
The final application needed evidence that the trust faced an immediate threat.
That evidence arrived when Ryan told me his mother would move into the house whether I agreed or not.
The violence made the danger impossible to dismiss.
Victoria stared at the order.
“You cannot freeze my business.”
“The court can,” my attorney said.
“And it has.”
“That money belongs to me.”
“Then you will have an opportunity to prove how you earned it.”
Victoria looked at Ryan.
He looked away.
Her voice sharpened.
“You told me she had approved everything.”
Ryan pointed at her.
“You created the invoices.”
“You said you could sign on her behalf.”
