“Agreed.”
“And if the baby is yours, being feared does not automatically make you a father.”
“I know.”
“You will have to show up.”
“I know that too.”
Three days later, we completed a noninvasive paternity test through a private clinic.
Dante arrived alone because I had asked him to.
He sat beside me while blood was drawn and did not complain when I refused his offer to pay until the result came back.
For the next week, he sent no diamonds, cars, or extravagant gifts.
He sent almond croissants in an unmarked paper bag.
The first delivery included a card with only six words: These survived the journey.
I checked.
There was no signature.
There did not need to be.
Derek began calling the day after the bakery confrontation.
I ignored him.
Then he sent a voice message.
His tone was softer than it had been in the café, but I recognized the manipulation beneath it.
He said the encounter had been misunderstood.
He said Tiffany was upset.
He said someone had shared a short video from the bakery and people at his firm were asking questions.
Then his real concern emerged.
He wanted me to release a statement saying we had been joking.
When I did not answer, he sent another message.
This one was angry.
He reminded me that he knew where I lived.
He claimed he had photographs from our relationship that could make me look unstable.
He said no board would care about one rude sentence once he explained what I was really like.
I forwarded both messages to Dante.
His response arrived a minute later.
What do you want done?
Not: I will handle it.
Not: He is finished.
What do you want done?
I told him I wanted the messages preserved.
I wanted the bakery footage secured.
I wanted Derek warned in writing not to contact me again.
Dante arranged exactly that and nothing more.
Tiffany contacted me the following afternoon.
She did not apologize immediately.
She admitted that she had laughed because Derek had spent months describing me as jealous, dependent, and unable to accept the breakup.
She had believed him because the story made her feel chosen.
Then she asked whether I had really paid his bills.
I sent her copies of the old statements and the receipt for the Rolex.
I also sent Derek’s first voice message, the one in which he admitted there had been a video and begged me to call his cruelty a joke.
Tiffany returned the ring that night.
Derek blamed me.
He left a final voicemail saying I had destroyed his future.
I listened once, then deleted it after the preserved copy was safely stored.
A week after the clinic appointment, Dante came to my apartment carrying a sealed envelope.
He did not open it downstairs.
He did not have someone call him with the result in advance.
He waited outside my door until I invited him in, then placed the envelope on my kitchen table.
My hands shook as I broke the seal.
Probability of paternity: greater than 99.99 percent.
The room went silent.
