Chapter 5 — His Brother’s Photos Ended the Marriage—Then One Folder Opened

“Yes.”

“I should have asked for the originals.”

“Yes.”

“I should have believed you.”

Maya said nothing.

He finally raised his eyes.

“I loved you.”

“That was what made it worse.”

His face tightened.

“You loved me when it was easy,” she continued.

“The moment loving me required you to risk being wrong about Marcus, you chose him.

You did not leave because his lie was perfect.

You left because his voice mattered more than mine.”

Alexander nodded once.

There was no defense available to him, and for the first time he did not search for one.

“I am sorry,” he said.

Maya gathered the papers into her folder.

“I believe you.”

Hope flickered across his face.

She closed the folder.

“That does not return the woman who waited behind that door after you left.

It does not give Sophie the first five years of a family she never had.

And it does not make me trust you again.”

“I know.”

“No,” Maya said gently.

“You are beginning to know.”

She left him in the boardroom with the uncropped photographs still glowing against the wall.

Alexander did not ask her to come back.

He began instead with the responsibilities that did not require her forgiveness.

He stopped sending assistants to custody exchanges.

He attended Sophie’s school meetings himself.

He learned which stories she liked before bed, how she cut the crust from sandwiches, and why she became quiet whenever adults argued near a door.

He never criticized Maya in front of her.

He never asked Sophie to carry apologies between them.

When Maya set a boundary, he respected it without treating obedience as proof that he had changed.

Months passed.

At Sophie’s kindergarten recital, Alexander arrived early and found Maya saving one seat beside her.

He paused in the aisle.

“Is that for me?” he asked.

“It is for Sophie’s father.”

He sat down without touching her.

Onstage, Sophie searched the audience until she found them both.

Her face brightened.

After the recital, she ran toward them holding a paper snowflake covered in silver glitter.

“I made it for our family,” she said.

Alexander crouched so she would not see the pain in his face.

Maya saw it.

She also saw that he did not use the moment to ask for anything.

A year after the board meeting, Alexander brought Maya a small box during a custody exchange.

Inside was the baby-name book from the penthouse.

The page with Lily, Grace, and Sophie was still folded at the corner.

“I found it when I sold the condo,” he said.

“It belongs to you.”

Maya ran her thumb over the blue circle around Sophie’s name.

“You kept it.”

“I kept everything.”
