Chapter 4 — His Cleaner Found the Recording His Entire Family Feared

“You thought a box could get you fired?”

Lina looked at him.

“I worked in your house.

I knew enough to understand that asking questions was not part of my employment description.”

That almost made him smile.

Almost.

Then his expression darkened again.

“You should have told me.”

“Until this afternoon, you’d never spoken to me.”

He had no answer to that.

At the estate, the west wing felt different after midnight.

The halls were still immaculate.

The marble still reflected the chandeliers.

The paintings still watched from gilded frames.

But for Lina, the house no longer felt like a place built on rumors.

It felt like evidence.

She led Rafael to the service corridor near the west-wing bathroom where Marcus had first summoned her earlier that week.

Behind a linen storage alcove was a narrow utility closet.

The door was locked.

“It wasn’t locked that day,” Lina said.

Rafael stared at the keyhole.

One of the guards used Marcus’s keys.

The third key opened it.

Inside were cleaning chemicals, folded drop cloths, old paint tins, and stacked maintenance supplies.

No evidence box.

Marcus, standing several feet away with a guard on either side, exhaled through his nose.

“There,” he said.

“Satisfied?”

Lina ignored him.

She remembered the first week clearly because she had been terrified of making mistakes.

The box had not been sitting openly on a shelf.

It had been behind two large containers of floor sealant, wedged against the back wall.

She crouched.

The sealant containers were still there.

But the wall behind them looked wrong.

A thin vertical scratch ran through the paint.

Lina moved one container aside.

Then the other.

A rectangular panel had been cut into the wall and painted to match.

Rafael crouched beside her.

“Was that there before?”

“I don’t know.

The box was in front of it.”

Marcus said, “This is ridiculous.”

Rafael pressed his fingertips to the panel.

It shifted.

Behind it was a shallow cavity.

Inside sat the box.

Same faded blue mark.

Same handwritten date.

Lina’s breath caught.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Rafael removed the box himself and carried it to his father’s old study, a room that had been kept locked for years.

He set it on the desk.

There was no dramatic explosion of secrets when the lid came off.

Just paper.
