Ethan stopped the recording.
Veronica’s face had lost its color.
“You searched through private audio to trap me.”
“I searched because a child told me she was dirty and pointed toward our bedroom.”
“She is manipulating you.”
The words landed so harshly that even Veronica seemed to hear them after they left her mouth.
Ethan looked at Lily.
The little girl had hidden her face again.
“You believe a three-year-old planned this?” he asked.
“I believe Rosa knows exactly how vulnerable you are to a sad story.”
Rosa stiffened.
Veronica turned toward her.
“You should have corrected your daughter instead of allowing her to wander around touching things that do not belong to her.”
Rosa’s fear began to change.
It did not become anger all at once.
It became stillness.
“My daughter touched one strap,” she said.
“You made her wash her hands until they hurt.”
“I never told her to do that.”
“You told her she was dirty.
She believed you.”
“That is not my responsibility.”
Ethan’s thumb moved across the phone.
The security archive showed several flagged moments from the previous months.
Most had been triggered by sharp voices in otherwise quiet rooms.
Ethan had ignored the automatic notices, assuming they came from television audio, dropped objects, or routine household noise.
Now he opened the oldest one.
Veronica’s voice sounded from the hallway.
“Use the other entrance when my friends are here.”
Rosa answered, “The service elevator is being repaired.”
“Then wait downstairs.”
“I have groceries that need refrigeration.”
“Rosa, do not make me explain appearances to you.”
The clip ended.
Ethan opened another.
A glass broke somewhere in the kitchen.
Lily gasped.
Veronica said, “Of course.
This is why children like her do not belong in homes like this.”
Rosa’s voice came next.
“It slipped from my hand, Ms.
Vale.
Lily was across the room.”
“I was not speaking to you.”
Another clip.
Another quiet cruelty.
A comment about Rosa’s accent.
A demand that Lily remain in the back room during a dinner.
A warning that grateful employees did not question future members of the family.
The penthouse had preserved what Rosa had been forced to swallow.
By the fourth recording, Veronica was no longer pretending to be amused.
“Turn that off.”
Ethan did not.
“Turn it off, Ethan.”
He paused the audio.
Veronica took a breath and changed tactics.
