Tessa looked at the wine stain across my dress.
Some of the color left her face.
“I thought you were refusing to let him go,” she said.
“You never asked me.”
“No.”
“You walked up to a stranger and poured wine on her because a married man told you she was the obstacle.”
Tessa swallowed.
She had no answer.
Julian did.
“This is becoming ridiculous.”
That was his second mistake.
The first had been telling me not to make a scene.
The second was forgetting that everyone around him made a living listening to language.
A reporter called from behind one of the cameras, “Which part is ridiculous, Mr.
West?”
Julian looked toward the voice.
Another journalist asked, “Are you denying a relationship with Ms.
Lane?”
Tessa turned toward him.
It was the question Julian had been trying desperately to avoid.
He could protect his public image by denying her.
Or he could protect her by admitting he had betrayed me.
For once, there was no answer that allowed him to remain the reasonable man in the center.
He chose silence.
Tessa watched him choose it.
Then she whispered, “Say something.”
Julian rubbed a hand across his jaw.
“Tessa and I became close.”
A reporter asked, “Romantically?”
He exhaled.
“Yes.”
There was no explosion.
No collective scream.
Just the unmistakable sound of fifty people recognizing that the story had changed.
Tessa’s shoulders dropped.
I felt something in my chest loosen too.
For weeks, I had been living inside the gap between what I could see and what my husband insisted was true.
Now he had said it aloud.
Not because he respected me enough to confess privately.
Because the room had become too crowded for another lie.
Julian stepped closer.
“Evelyn, please.
We can go home and talk.”
“I’m not going home with you.”
His expression sharpened.
“Don’t make decisions while you’re upset.”
Again, the language.
As though my problem was emotion rather than evidence.
I turned my phone toward myself and scrolled to one of the dates.
“April eighteenth.
You told me your flight from Chicago was canceled.”
Julian said nothing.
I looked at Tessa.
“Were you with him?”
Her eyes flicked toward Julian.
Then back to me.
