Chapter 5 — His Mistress Called From Labor While I Held the Gala Microphone

4.9Editorial score

Vivian followed him halfway to the doors, then stopped.

Going with her son would look like an admission.

Staying would force her to sit in the wreckage of his choices.

For once, she could not find an option that protected the family image.

The ballroom remained silent after the doors closed.

I looked at the rows of faces and realized I had reached the moment I feared most.

The announcement was over.

The adrenaline was fading.

I had no script for what came after telling the truth.

So I returned to the purpose of the evening.

“The foundation’s work matters,” I said.

“What happened in my marriage should not take a book out of a child’s hands.

Please stay.

Please support the people who came here to serve them.”

Then I stepped away from the microphone.

The applause began near the back.

It was not thunderous.

It was not cinematic.

A few people did not join at all.

But it spread.

The foundation director took my hand as I came down from the stage.

“You did not owe us silence,” she said.

Those six words nearly undid me.

I did not cry while Dominic confronted me.

I did not cry when Vivian threatened me.

I did not cry when I announced the divorce.

I cried in a service hallway beside stacked tablecloths while a woman I barely knew stood between me and the ballroom doors so no cameras could follow.

My attorney waited until I could breathe again.

“Do you want to leave?” she asked.

I looked through the narrow window in the door.

Guests were returning to their seats.

The musicians had begun playing softly.

Servers moved through the room with dessert.

“No,” I said.

“I helped build this event.

I’m staying for the cause.”

For the next hour, I spoke to donors, thanked volunteers, and answered no questions about Dominic.

When someone tried to ask about Kendra, I said, “There is a child being born tonight.

The child is innocent.”

That became the boundary I kept throughout everything that followed.

I never contacted Kendra.

I never released her photograph.

I never blamed the baby for the choices adults had made.

Dominic called me at 2:11 the next morning.

I was awake in the guest room because I could not bear to sleep in our bed.

“The baby is healthy,” he said.

I closed my eyes.

“I’m glad.”

He was silent.

Then he said, “You destroyed me tonight.”

“No, Dominic.

I stopped helping you hide.”

“You made a private issue public.”

“Your company was tagged in the pregnancy announcement.”

“That post was taken down.”

“The truth did not disappear with it.”
