“It’s evidence.”
She pressed play.
Adrian’s recorded voice filled the lobby.
At first, the audio was muffled.
A chair scraped.
Papers rustled.
Then his words became clear.
“By the time Claire finds out, Tessa will look like the thief and Claire will look like the jealous wife.
Neither one will be credible.”
My breath stopped.
He had used my name.
Tessa’s recorded voice asked, “And the house?”
Adrian answered without hesitation.
“Once the second transfer clears, it won’t matter.
I’ll control the money.”
The recording ended.
No one moved.
Adrian stared at Tessa with an expression colder than anything I had ever seen at home.
“You recorded a confidential conversation.”
“You were planning to destroy me.”
“I was trying to contain your mistakes.”
“You used my login.”
“You gave me access.”
Tessa’s face changed.
Fear remained, but shame no longer controlled her.
“You told me you loved me.”
Adrian glanced at the watching employees.
“This is not the place.”
“That answer is the reason this is the place.”
He had spent months making both of us believe that our private pain protected him.
He expected me to hide the affair because I would be ashamed.
He expected Tessa to hide the financial evidence because she would fear losing her career.
He had mistaken silence for loyalty.
The elevator doors opened again.
Two members of the company’s compliance team entered with another security officer.
One asked Adrian to surrender his badge, laptop, and office keys while an independent review was conducted.
Adrian laughed as though the request were absurd.
“You cannot suspend me based on accusations from an intern.”
The compliance officer looked toward the reception desk.
“We received the transaction logs, vendor records, and audio file this morning.
This is not based on a single accusation.”
Adrian turned toward me.
For one brief second, I saw the man I had married—or at least the version of him I had believed in.
His expression softened.
His voice lowered.
“Claire, come home with me.
We can fix this.”
The words might have broken me the night before.
Now they sounded like another door he wanted me to walk through so he could lock it behind me.
“There is no home for you there,” I said.
“Your suitcases are beside Tessa.”
His face twisted.
“You think you can survive this without me?”
I looked at the forged signature again.
“I think that’s what frightens you.”
Security escorted him toward the elevator.
