Chapter 5 — I Opened Jasper’s Folder—And Finally Understood Why Penelope Was Terrified

4.9Editorial score

Every face turned toward me.

I pulled out my phone.

“You said exactly the same thing last night.”

Jasper’s chair scraped backward.

“You were listening?”

“Sarah,” Caleb said, confused.

I pressed play.

Jasper’s voice filled the dining room.

Do you want me to send him?

Then Penelope’s frightened whisper:

Please, Jasper.

Silas closed his eyes.

Caleb stared at his mother.

“What is this?”

Jasper reached for my phone.

I stepped back.

“Don’t.”

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

Penelope stood.

“Sit down, Jasper.”

He laughed.

“You think one recording changes anything?”

“No,” she said.

“The folder does.”

The front doorbell rang.

Jasper froze.

Penelope looked at me.

I had made the call that morning using the number printed on the investigator’s report.

Penelope’s attorney entered first.

Behind him was the investigator.

Caleb looked from one stranger to the other.

“What is happening?”

His mother finally told him.

Not elegantly.

Not proudly.

She told him everything.

About Daniel.

About Adrian.

About Jasper’s payments.

About the property transfers.

About the threats.

Caleb’s face changed as each fact landed.

Then Jasper made his biggest mistake.

He stopped pretending.

“You stupid woman,” he snapped at Penelope.

“You think Adrian won’t hear about this?”

The investigator quietly lifted his phone.

Jasper saw it.

Too late.

Penelope’s attorney said, “Thank you.

That was useful.”

Jasper lunged toward the doorway.

Silas struck his cane against the floor.

“Stay where you are.”

It should not have been intimidating coming from a frail old man.

Somehow, it was.
