The officer spoke with him too.

He could not tell them what had happened during the four days I was away.

But he could tell them what he had seen that morning.

Me pounding on his door barefoot.

Noah wrapped in my hoodie.

Emily unresponsive in my arms.

He told the officer he had not needed me to explain anything before driving us.

“I knew they needed a hospital,” he said.

That simple sentence nearly broke me.

Hours later, Emily opened her eyes.

I was beside her when she did.

She blinked slowly, disoriented by the lights, then turned her head toward me.

“Ethan?”

This time nobody took the phone away.

I leaned close enough for her to see me clearly.

“I’m here.”

Her eyes filled immediately.

“Noah?”

“He’s being treated.

The doctors are watching him.”

She tried to sit up.

I told her not to move.

Her fingers closed weakly around mine.

“I tried,” she whispered.

Those two words were worse than a scream.

“Tried what?”

“To get help.”

I said nothing.

Emily looked toward the door as if she expected my mother to walk through it.

Then, slowly, she told me what the four days had felt like from inside that bedroom.

She had been exhausted and hurting after childbirth.

Noah needed constant care.

She depended on Linda and Ashley because that was why they were there.

At first, she thought she simply needed to endure the weakness.

But as the days passed, everything became harder.

Getting up.

Eating.

Drinking enough.

Keeping up with Noah.

She said she had called out for help repeatedly when she felt too weak to manage him alone.

Sometimes someone came.

Sometimes nobody did immediately.

When Noah cried, they increasingly treated the crying as an annoyance instead of a warning that something might be wrong.

Emily remembered asking my mother whether they should call someone because she didn’t feel right.

According to Emily, Mom told her she was exhausted and emotional and needed sleep.

Emily believed her.

Why wouldn’t she?

Linda had raised two children.

Emily was a first-time mother seven days into the most overwhelming week of her life.

Then she told me about the video call.

The one where I heard her whisper my name.

“I was trying to tell you to come home,” she said.

I couldn’t speak.

“She took the phone.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t know if I was overreacting.
