Chapter 5 — My Best Friend’s Wife Whispered She Knew What I Wanted

4.9Editorial score

Vanessa’s eyes stayed on me.

“You could have told me privately.”

“No,” I said.

Her expression tightened.

“You wanted to punish me?”

“No.

I wanted to stop hiding something from him.”

The distinction mattered to me, even if it didn’t make the moment less painful.

Derek pulled out a chair and sat.

For the first time since entering the house, he looked tired instead of angry.

“Do you love her?” he asked me.

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

I could have chosen a safer word.

Attraction.

Confusion.

Loneliness.

Anything that allowed us all to leave with a little more dignity.

But I had already decided what kind of night this was going to be.

“I don’t know what I’m allowed to call it,” I said.

“But it’s more than attraction.”

Derek’s eyes closed briefly.

Vanessa looked down at her water.

Then Derek asked her the question I had been avoiding for months.

“What do you feel for him?”

She took a long time to answer.

“I care about him.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“I know.”

“Then answer me.”

She looked at me once.

I shook my head—not to tell her what to say, but to make clear that I would not rescue her from saying it.

She turned back to her husband.

“I have feelings for him too.”

Derek stood so suddenly the chair legs scraped hard across the floor.

Outside, somebody laughed near the grill, unaware that three lives had just shifted six feet away.

Derek walked toward the back door.

Vanessa reached for him.

He moved out of reach.

“Don’t.”

She froze.

He looked at me.

“I need you to stay away from both of us.”

I nodded.

“You won’t hear from me.”

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“We’re going home.”

She followed him outside.

I stayed beside the walnut table.

Through the window, I watched them leave together without speaking.

The barbecue ended fifteen minutes later.

I told everyone Derek wasn’t feeling well.

Nobody challenged the explanation, though I could tell from the careful way people avoided my eyes that they had sensed enough.

When the yard was empty, I shut off the string lights and sat alone at the restored table.

For months I had imagined that the worst possible outcome would be Derek discovering how I felt.

I had been wrong.

The worst part was realizing that secrecy had allowed me to enjoy an intimacy I would never have defended openly.
