She slid from her chair, grabbed the old tablet, and squeezed beside me.

“Smile.”

My first instinct was to object.

My hair was messy.

I was wearing an old sweatshirt.

There were dishes drying behind us and spelling words scattered across the table.

Then I understood.

So I smiled.

Chloe took the picture.

There were no orchids behind us.

No chandeliers.

No silk tables or designer dresses.

Just a tired teacher, an eight-year-old girl, a scratched kitchen table, and a home so small that every room could hear the other one laughing.

Chloe studied the photograph.

“See?” she said.

“You didn’t ruin it.”

I looked at the screen.

For most of my life, I had mistaken being tolerated for belonging.

I had thought keeping the peace meant swallowing every insult before it reached the people I loved.

My daughter had understood something before I did.

Truth does not always arrive politely.

Sometimes it walks into a glittering room in worn shoes, climbs onto a DJ platform with shaking hands, and presses play.

I kissed the top of Chloe’s head.

“No,” I said.

“We didn’t ruin anything worth keeping.”
