Chapter 4 — My Family Gave Away My Condo—Then My Father Saw the Deed

4.9Editorial score

Not anyone’s spare room.

Mine.

The evaluator moved quickly through the condo.

When we finished, Marcus handed me a revised confirmation.

“No major issues.

Closing remains on schedule.”

“What about the appliances?” I asked.

“They stay unless excluded.”

I thought of my father shouting through the freezing night.

You are not to touch the appliances.

“Fine,” I said.

“They can stay.”

The irony made the decision easier.

On December 28, my mother finally stopped pretending she had authority and started asking questions.

She called while I was dismantling my home office.

“What is Gavin Pierce doing for you?”

“Legal work.”

“What legal work?”

“My legal work.”

“Cassidy, I am your mother.”

“That does not make you my attorney.”

Her voice dropped.

“Your father says you changed the deed.”

There it was.

Not concern.

Not confusion.

The deed.

“I clarified ownership.”

“You had no right to do that without speaking to us.”

I stopped wrapping my monitor cables.

“No right to clarify ownership of my own home?”

“You know perfectly well what I mean.”

“I actually don’t.”

She inhaled sharply.

“We helped you get that condo.”

“You co-signed the original mortgage.

I refinanced years ago.

You have not paid one dollar toward this property.”

“That is not the point.”

“It is exactly the point.”

Then she said something that confirmed what I already knew.

“You are going to ruin Christmas for everyone.”

Christmas was already over.

But in my family, any consequence that arrived after their behavior was considered an attack on the holiday itself.

I asked, “Did you call an estate liquidator about my furniture?”

Silence.

“Brittany exaggerated.”

“Did you?”

“We were only trying to be practical.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“Did you authorize anyone to enter my condo?”

“No.”

That answer came too quickly.

I called building management immediately after we hung up.
