I laughed so hard I cried.

He started laughing too.

Then he handed me the worn photograph of Catherine holding me.

“This is the real gift,” he said.

I ran my thumb over the softened corner.

For most of my life, whenever I looked in a mirror, I saw features that belonged nowhere.

My hazel-green eyes belonged partly to Richard.

And the rest of me belonged to no one but myself.

I put the photograph in the wallet.

Then I closed it gently and slipped it into my pocket.
