Harlan looked at me.
“To Claire.”
For several seconds I thought I had misunderstood him.
The room seemed to shrink around the sound of my own name.
I looked down at the document, but the lines blurred.
Ethan laughed.
It was a short, disbelieving sound.
“No.
No, she wouldn’t do that.”
“She did,” Harlan said.
“That company is family property.”
“Your mother’s interest in the company was her property.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I know precisely what the documents mean.”
Lauren pressed her lips together.
The baby stirred, and she rocked him automatically, but her attention remained fixed on Ethan.
I finally found my voice.
“What exactly did she leave me?”
Harlan turned the folder so I could see it, though the legal language might as well have been another language at that moment.
“Her controlling interest in Caldwell Property Holdings, subject to the terms detailed here.
Her personal residence.
Her non-retirement investment portfolio.
Several family assets listed in the attached schedule.”
Ethan stood.
The movement was so abrupt that his chair rolled backward and struck the wall.
“You can’t be serious.”
Harlan’s expression remained unchanged.
“I am reading a duly executed will.”
Ethan pointed at me.
“She manipulated her.”
That was the first time all morning I almost smiled.
I had spent eleven years being told I was too soft, too emotional, too willing to let people have their way.
Now, apparently, I had secretly become a mastermind.
“I didn’t know any of this,” I said.
“Oh, please.”
“I didn’t.”
“You expect me to believe my mother hands you everything and you had no idea?”
Before I could answer, Harlan lifted one hand.
“Margaret anticipated that accusation.”
Ethan stopped.
Of course she had.
Harlan returned to the letter.
“Claire does not know about these changes.
I instructed James not to tell her before my death.
If Ethan claims otherwise, he is lying.”
Lauren looked directly at Ethan now.
His face hardened.
Harlan continued.
“I also instructed that Claire receive copies of the records that led me to make this decision.
Not because she needs more pain, but because she deserves facts.”
Records.
The word chilled me more than the inheritance had.
I had spent a year living in uncertainty.
Late nights.
Password changes.
A second phone Ethan said belonged to work.
