He was shaking, but his eyes were fixed on the door.

“Mom,” he whispered, “did Dad do this?”

I put my hand against his cheek.

I could not lie to him.

“I think so.”

His face crumpled for half a second, then hardened in a way no child’s face should ever have to.

Outside, the police gave one final command.

Then the front door opened.

I heard Daniel immediately.

“Officers, thank God.”

His voice was transformed again.

Warm.

Concerned.

Almost relieved.

“My wife and son are sick.

I came home and found the house like this.”

I stared at the bathroom door in disbelief.

He was doing it again.

Creating a story before anyone else could speak.

One officer asked, “Where are your wife and son?”

“I don’t know.

I’ve been looking everywhere.”

The woman said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“They may have wandered outside.

My wife was confused earlier.”

The 911 operator heard that too.

Then another voice entered the house.

An officer farther back said, “Dispatch says the caller is still on the line.”

Silence.

Daniel’s next words came slowly.

“What caller?”

My phone vibrated softly against my palm.

The operator said, “Rachel, the officers know exactly where you are.”

Footsteps entered the hallway.

Daniel tried to speak over them.

“Wait.

That bathroom sticks sometimes.

Let me—”

“Step away from the door, sir.”

“I’m her husband.”

“Step away.”

His shoes scraped backward.

A knock came against the bathroom door.

“Rachel? Police.

You can open the door.”

I did not move immediately.

My body had stopped trusting voices.

The officer knocked again and gave me the dispatcher’s confirmation phrase.

Only then did I unlock it.

The door opened inward.

Bright hallway light flooded the bathroom.

Noah squinted against it.

I saw two uniformed officers first.

Then Daniel.

He was standing several feet away with his hands visible.
