Chapter 4 — My Mother Erased My Daughter From the Family—Then Grandpa Called

4.9Editorial score

I refused to let his home aide lose a paycheck because other adults had behaved badly.

But every discretionary distribution connected to my parents and Taylor was suspended pending review.

Taylor’s business loan stopped receiving extensions.

My parents’ housing support was placed under examination.

No money moved without documentation.

That was when my mother finally stopped crying and started threatening me.

“You think you can destroy this family?” she shouted when I answered one call with Evan listening beside me.

“No,” I said.

“I think you tried to financially erase an eighteen-year-old girl while using Grandpa to do it.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Then explain page four.”

Silence.

I waited.

She recovered quickly.

“Taylor has children too.

Why should everything go to McKenzie?”

There it was.

Not denial.

Just resentment.

“Everything isn’t going to McKenzie.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.

I know what Helen wrote.”

My mother’s voice sharpened.

“Your grandmother always poisoned you against us.”

Evan wrote something on the legal pad in front of him and slid it toward me.

Let her talk.

So I did.

I said nothing.

My mother filled the silence herself.

“She made you trustee because she knew you’d lord it over everybody.

Taylor actually needs help.

McKenzie has college, she has you, she has opportunities.

Taylor has a business and a family.”

I looked at Evan.

He raised one eyebrow.

My mother had just supplied motive without being asked.

Then she made it worse.

“And Walter agreed with us.”

“No,” I said.

“He didn’t.”

“He signed.”

“He says he was misled.”

Another silence.

Then my mother snapped, “He’s confused.”

That sentence changed everything.

Because only twenty-four hours earlier she had submitted documents relying on Grandpa’s mental competence and supposed informed wishes.

Now that his wishes contradicted hers, he was suddenly confused.

Evan ended the call for me.

Three days later, the family met at his office.

Not for Christmas dinner.

For a formal trust review.

My mother arrived in a dark coat with my father beside her.

Taylor came ten minutes later with Cody.

Nobody brought pie.

McKenzie did not attend.
