Chapter 2 — My Mother Stole My Home—Then My Father’s Record Player Blinked

4.9Editorial score

“What happened?” I asked.

“There was an attempted transfer this morning.”

“How much?”

He told me.

For a moment I said nothing.

It was not every dollar I owned.

Not even close.

The account they had targeted was the visible account we expected them to notice, while most of my actual reserves sat elsewhere behind controls they did not know existed.

But the amount was still large enough to remove any possibility that this was a misunderstanding.

“How did they try?”

“Online initiation followed by a telephone verification attempt.

They had enough personal information to clear the first layers.”

Of course they did.

My mother knew my childhood address, my father’s middle name, the street where I had grown up, old phone numbers, birthdays, schools.

Danny had lived in my house long enough to search drawers and mail.

“Did it go through?”

“No.

It hit the manual-review condition we created.”

“Who called?”

“We’re preserving the call recording and access logs.

I’m not going to characterize the voice until the internal investigation documents it.”

That was Adrian: no drama, no guesses, no satisfying declaration before the evidence was ready.

“Was anything released?”

“No.”

I closed my eyes for one second.

Then Adrian added, “There’s more.

The destination account appears connected to your sister.”

That hurt differently.

The furniture could be explained away as entitlement.

The heirlooms could be wrapped in family arguments.

My mother could claim she believed certain things belonged to my father’s estate.

But an attempted transfer into an account connected to Danny was something else entirely.

“Preserve everything,” I said.

“Already happening.”

When I left the hospital that afternoon, I had seventeen missed calls.

Nine from Danny.

Six from my mother.

Two from a number I did not recognize.

There were messages too.

Danny began with outrage.

Why is the bank freezing everything?

Then confusion.

Mom said you knew about this.

Then accusation.

You are deliberately trying to make us look like criminals.

My mother’s messages were different.

Call me immediately.

You are overreacting.

This is a family matter.

Then the line that told me Philip had already made contact.

Why did you involve a lawyer?

I did not answer any of them.

I called the unknown number.

A man introduced himself as Eric from the moving company.

That was the third person in the video.

His voice was cautious.
