Chapter 1 — My Parents Left My Children Alone—Then Saw the Attorney’s Folder

4.9Editorial score

My mother went pale before she had finished reading the first line.

The page was titled Notice of Revocation of Childcare and Emergency Authority.

Beneath the heading were Oliver’s name, Sophie’s name, and the names of both my parents.

Amber walked in behind them, still wearing the coat she had worn in the salon photographs.

My father entered last and quietly closed the door.

No one sat down.

My attorney remained beside me at the kitchen table.

Her black leather case rested near my discharge paperwork, and Margaret’s handwritten statement lay beneath a clear protective sleeve.

My mother stared at the folder.

“What is this?” she asked.

My attorney answered calmly.

“It is written notice that you and your husband are no longer authorized to collect, supervise, transport, or make emergency decisions for Whitney’s children.”

Amber gave a short laugh.

“You called a lawyer because Mom went to a hair appointment?”

I looked at her.

“No.

I called a lawyer because two children were left alone while their mother was unconscious in an operating room.”

My mother finally pulled out a chair.

“This is ridiculous.

They were safe.”

My attorney opened the folder to the next page.

“We are going to establish what happened before anyone decides what word to use for it.”

My mother’s eyes narrowed.

“There is nothing to establish.

We stepped away for a little while, and Margaret interfered.”

From the living room doorway, Margaret spoke.

“I brought two frightened children into my home.

That is not interference.”

My parents had not noticed her when they entered.

She stood with one hand resting on her cane and the other holding a copy of the statement she had written for me.

My mother turned sharply.

“You had no right to involve yourself in a family matter.”

Margaret did not raise her voice.

“They were five and seven.

They were alone.

That made it my matter.”

My father looked at the floor.

Amber folded her arms.

“They were not alone for three hours.”

My attorney slid the hospital timeline forward.

“Whitney was admitted at 9:12 that morning.

Her procedure began at 11:37.

Margaret observed Diane and Ray leaving at approximately 11:32.”

She placed Margaret’s statement beside it.

“Margaret found Oliver and Sophie on the porch shortly after noon.

Your parents returned at approximately 2:24.”

My mother shook her head.

“That cannot be right.”

Margaret looked directly at her.

“I checked my kitchen clock when I brought them inside.

Sophie kept asking when her grandparents were coming back.

I checked it repeatedly after that.”

My attorney added the screenshot of my phone log.

“Fourteen calls were made while Whitney was in surgery and recovery.”

Then she placed the salon photographs on the table.

Amber’s smile vanished.
