Chapter 7 — My Son Erased Me From the Family—Then Found His Father’s Notebook

4.9Editorial score

I stayed for one week, then left it voluntarily.

When he asked why, I told him I preferred direct invitations to discussions in which everyone assumed my answer.

So they learned to call.

The brown notebook remains in the house, wrapped in cloth inside José’s desk.

It is not displayed as a weapon.

It does not need to be.

The gate is still locked.

The wooden sign has weathered, and the black paint has faded beneath the sun.

I have considered taking it down, but I leave it there because the lesson was never only for my children.

It was for me too.

For years, I believed love meant keeping the door open no matter how people entered.

José’s notebook reminded me that a home without boundaries becomes a workplace for the person least willing to complain.

The old brass key no longer rests beneath the flowerpot.

It hangs on a hook inside my kitchen, where I can see it each morning.

The farm is still a place for family.

But now, family knocks.
