Chapter 2 — My Son Played the Recording That Silenced His Aunt’s Wedding

4.9Editorial score

“Give me the phone, son.”

Tyler flinched at the word son.

I left my chair and walked between them.

“Don’t take another step,” I said.

Michael stopped.

Only minutes earlier, he had watched his mother call me a used product while strangers laughed.

He had expected me to shout, cry, or lunge at someone.

He had expected a performance he could package for a judge.

Instead, I opened my bag.

I removed the folder and placed it on the edge of the head table.

“Your custody petition was filed before tonight,” I said.

“It claims witnesses had already seen me become violent at this wedding.”

James turned sharply toward Michael.

“At this wedding?”

I opened the folder to the marked page.

“The statement says, ‘During the bride’s reception, she became aggressive after a harmless family joke and frightened the child.’ Past tense.

The reception had not happened when this was submitted.”

Michael’s mouth opened, but no answer came.

Caroline stared at the document.

That reaction told me she had never expected me to bring it.

I had almost left the folder at home.

My attorney had told me not to discuss the case with Michael without counsel present.

But after receiving the petition, I had started carrying the papers everywhere, as if keeping them close could stop them from taking my son.

Now the false statement lay beneath the wedding lights for everyone to see.

James read the paragraph twice.

“Caroline, did you know about this?”

“Of course not,” she said.

“Michael handles his own legal problems.”

The phone recording answered for her.

Her voice came through the speakers again.

“Once you get temporary custody, she’ll do whatever you want.

She’ll sign the statement, stop fighting, and stay away from us.

Women like her always fold when you take away the only thing they have.”

Tyler’s chin trembled.

I reached up and rested my hand against his back.

He leaned toward me but did not stop the recording.

Michael’s recorded voice said, “She’ll never agree to give me Tyler permanently.”

“She won’t have a choice after tomorrow,” Caroline replied.

“Not once the whole room sees her lose control.”

The clip ended.

No music followed it.

No one laughed.

Tyler lowered the phone.

Caroline set her champagne glass down so hard that some of it spilled across the white tablecloth.

“It was a private conversation,” she said.

“You can’t record people without permission.”

James stared at her.

“That’s your defense?”

“I was trying to help my brother.”

“By humiliating the mother of his child?”

“You don’t understand what she’s like.”

Caroline pointed at me, but the gesture lacked the authority it had possessed before the recording played.

“She manipulates everyone.

She acts calm, and then she makes people feel sorry for her.”

“I watched you put an insult on her seat,” James said.

“I watched your mother announce it to the room.
