“And I was wrong.

None of that gave you permission to touch my son’s food.”

The police arrived while the boys were being prepared for transport.

Lauren gave them the empty bottle, the sealed plate, the spoon, and the folded napkin.

She explained where each item had been found and made clear that she had worn gloves before handling anything.

Tyler told them what he had seen.

He had entered the kitchen looking for another roll.

Megan was standing with her back toward him, pressing something inside a napkin with the back of a spoon.

When she noticed him, she told him it was garlic and ordered him into the dining room.

Then he remembered something else.

“She put one steak on a blue plate first,” he said.

“She said that one was Ethan’s.”

Ethan’s plate was blue.

The others were white.

Megan denied it again.

She claimed the medicine had fallen accidentally, that she had intended to throw the steak away, and that Patricia must have placed it in front of Ethan by mistake.

Patricia shook her head.

“You carried the plates to the table yourself.”

Megan’s story shifted once more.

She said she had only used a tiny piece of the tablet.

Then she said she had not known it was prescription medication.

Then she claimed Lauren had left it on the counter.

Each new version contradicted the last.

Chris stood silently with his phone in his hand.

Suddenly, he looked down at the screen.

His expression emptied.

“What?” I asked.

He did not answer immediately.

Instead, he opened a message thread and handed the phone to one of the officers.

The message had been sent by Megan less than an hour before dinner.

Chris read it aloud when the officer asked for confirmation.

“I gave Ethan something to settle him.

Don’t let Lauren make a scene.”

Megan lunged for the phone.

The officer stepped between them.

“That’s not what it sounds like,” she said.

Chris stared at her.

“What else could it possibly mean?”

“I was joking.”

“You sent it before he smelled the steak.”

“I knew Lauren would complain about something.”

“You said you gave him something.”

“It was a joke.”

“Then why did you tell us it was an accident?”

Megan had no answer.

She was taken to another room for questioning while the boys were transported for evaluation.

Chris went with Tyler.

Lauren and I followed with Ethan.

During the drive, Ethan sat between us clutching the sleeves of his hoodie.

“Is Tyler going to be okay?” he asked.

“Yes,” Lauren said.

“You stopped him before he ate it.”

“I didn’t stop him.

You did.”

“You warned us first.”

He looked down.
