Victoria backed away from the bed.

“I never agreed to any of this.”

Marcus turned on her.

“Be quiet.”

That command exposed more than an admission would have.

Victoria obeyed instantly, lowering her eyes as though she had heard it many times before.

The nurse checked my pulse, then leaned close to my face.

“Valerie, if you can hear me, try to move your right hand.”

I hesitated.

Marcus watched the nurse.

Victoria watched Marcus.

Leo watched me.

Ms.

Lawson gave the smallest nod.

I pressed my index finger against the sheet.

The nurse froze.

“Do it again.”

I moved it a second time.

Leo covered his mouth with both hands.

“Mom.”

My heart rate climbed.

The monitor betrayed me with faster, sharper beeps.

Marcus stepped toward the bed.

“That’s a reflex.”

The security officer stopped him again.

The nurse called for the attending physician.

Within moments, the room filled with controlled movement.

A doctor shone a light across my eyes and asked me to follow it.

I did.

He told me to blink twice.

I blinked twice.

Marcus continued insisting that the responses were involuntary until the doctor asked me a final question.

“Valerie, are you aware of who is standing beside your bed?”

I forced my eyes fully open.

The room tilted.

Light stabbed through my skull.

Faces sharpened slowly from pale shapes into people.

Leo stood closest to me, trembling in his wrinkled school clothes.

Behind him, Ms.

Lawson held the red folder.

Victoria had pressed herself against the wall.

Marcus looked less like a grieving husband now.

Without his practiced expression, he looked cornered.

My throat burned when I tried to speak.

The first sound was barely more than air.

The nurse brought water to my lips.

I tried again.

“Get him away from my son.”

Leo broke.

He bent over my hand and cried into the blanket, his small shoulders shaking with every breath.

I managed to curl two fingers around his.

Marcus stared at me as though I had risen from a grave he had already paid to close.

“Valerie,” he said carefully, “you’re confused.

You’ve been unconscious for twelve days.”

“I heard you.”

“You heard fragments while heavily medicated.”
