“Same hand.”
Emily pressed her palm toward the camera.
Then she whispered, “Mommy said I’m not supposed to tell you Mr.
Graham sleeps in your room.”
Cole stopped the video before Vanessa opened the door.
“How long ago?”
I gave him the date.
“And after that?”
“Emily changed.
Vanessa started controlling our calls.
Her family was at the house constantly.”
“Did Emily ever say they threatened her?”
“No.”
I hated how quickly the word came out.
I had seen the fear growing around the edges of my daughter’s behavior, but I had no sentence from her explaining it.
No confession.
No direct accusation.
Cole nodded.
“Then don’t fill in what she hasn’t said.
Let her tell it in her own words.”
That was exactly why I had called him.
The old version of me wanted speed.
A door.
A confrontation.
Vanessa forced to look at me while I demanded an explanation.
The father Emily needed required something harder.
Restraint.
I rode with an officer instead of driving myself.
By the time we reached the local child-services office, dawn was starting to pale the edge of the sky.
Emily was sitting on a couch under a gray blanket.
One pink sneaker was on her foot.
The other was missing.
She saw me in the doorway and froze.
I didn’t rush her.
I lifted my hand.
Palm out.
Her face crumpled.
“Same hand,” she whispered.
Then she ran to me.
I dropped to my knees and caught her carefully.
She wrapped both arms around my neck so hard I could feel her shaking through my uniform.
“You came.”
“I came.”
“Grandma said you wouldn’t.”
I held her tighter.
“Grandma was wrong.”
That was all I said about Celeste.
There would be time for adults and accusations later.
Emily did not need me turning her into a witness while she was still trying to become a child again.
The child-services worker explained that officers had arrived at the house after receiving the preserved doorbell footage.
Vanessa initially insisted the family had merely been “disciplining” Emily after a tantrum.
Celeste gave a different version.
She said Emily had fallen.
Miranda claimed nobody had pulled her hair.
Kelsey said the liquid poured on her had been an accident.
Brielle said she had barely been outside.
