“Mrs.

Carter,” he said gently, “may I examine your wrists?”

Mom looked toward Vanessa as though waiting for permission.

Vanessa forced a smile.

“Of course she can show you.”

Mom slowly extended both hands.

The doctor crouched beside her.

He inspected the bruises without touching them at first.

“These appear consistent with forceful gripping or restraint,” he said.

“They are not minor contact marks.”

“She bruises easily,” Vanessa replied.

“Do you have medical records showing a condition that would explain this pattern?”

Vanessa said nothing.

The doctor stood.

“And why was the room nearly empty?”

“She threw things.”

“Which things?”

“Lamps.

Decorations.

Anything she could reach.”

“Where are those damaged objects now?”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the hallway.

“I disposed of them.”

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“Including the dresser, chair, television, and bedside table?”

Vanessa looked at me again.

I had photographed those items in the locked basement storage room before sunrise.

They had not been destroyed.

They had been removed to make Mom’s room easier to control and harder to escape from.

I slid the photographs across the table.

Vanessa’s face lost color.

“You had no right to search through my things.”

Mom finally turned her head.

“My dresser is not your thing,” she said quietly.

The room fell silent.

Vanessa stared at her.

Mom’s posture changed.

The confusion drained from her face.

Her shoulders straightened, and the sharp intelligence I had seen upstairs returned to her eyes.

“Neither is my money,” she continued.

“Neither is my house.

Neither is my mind.”

The doctor lowered his pen.

Vanessa looked from Mom to me.

“You told her to do this.”

“Yes,” I said.

“I asked her to act confused.”

“You manipulated a medical evaluation.”

“No.

I prevented you from manipulating one.”

Vanessa turned to the doctor.

“You can’t accept this.

They planned it.

Ethan has been home less than a day.

He doesn’t know what she’s been like.”
