Chapter 6 — She Banned Me From the BBQ—Then Asked Me to Sign the Check

4.9Editorial score

My parents never gave me the sweeping apology I might once have wanted.

Mom eventually admitted the laughing emoji had been thoughtless.

Dad said the heart had been meant for Gage, which somehow made it worse before it became funny.

I didn’t demand a family summit.

I didn’t need one.

The part that mattered had already happened in that glass office.

Tegan had arrived expecting to find someone important enough to move money for her.

Gage had arrived expecting his quiet sister to introduce them to that person.

They had both stopped outside my door and discovered those were the same woman.

But the title on the wall wasn’t the real reversal.

I had held that title before the barbecue message.

I had earned it before my mother laughed.

I had been competent before my father sent the heart.

Nothing about me changed when Tegan read the plaque.

Only her understanding did.

Months later, I was working another Saturday morning when a family message appeared on my phone.

Gage was asking who could bring extra folding chairs to something at Mom and Dad’s house.

For years, I would have answered before anyone else had time to read it.

This time I left the phone beside my coffee.

A few minutes later, Gage wrote again.

Never mind.

I’ve got them.

I smiled, picked up my still-warm coffee, and went back to work.
