The aide glanced toward his cane.
“And because she reminded you of someone?”
Michael looked toward the window.
“Maybe.”
He did not elaborate.
A month after the bus ride, Emily’s school held a small family breakfast.
Sarah almost skipped it because she hated missing work, but her new schedule allowed her to arrive late that morning without losing pay.
She and Emily walked together.
Emily wore the same blue polo and the same patched yellow raincoat.
The weather had turned colder.
As they approached the entrance, Emily suddenly stopped.
“Mom.”
Sarah followed her gaze.
An older man stood near the school doors in a gray coat, leaning lightly on a wooden cane.
Two men in black jackets waited several yards behind him.
Emily’s face exploded into recognition.
“Mr.
Michael!”
She ran before Sarah could stop her.
Michael turned at the sound and smiled.
“Emily.”
Sarah hurried after her, embarrassed.
“I’m sorry.
She remembers everybody.”
“I would hope she remembers me,” Michael said.
“She rescued me from a difficult bus ride.”
Emily pointed toward the two men.
“Are those your friends?”
One of the bodyguards almost smiled.
“Something like that,” Michael said.
Sarah studied him more carefully.
There was something familiar about his face, though she could not place it.
Then the school principal came through the doorway.
“Mr.
Michael, we weren’t expecting you this early.”
Her tone changed everything.
Sarah looked from the principal to Michael, then toward the two men behind him.
Recognition finally arrived.
She had seen his photograph in the local news, standing at county meetings, hospital fundraisers, business openings, and public events.
Her stomach tightened.
Emily tugged her sleeve.
“Mom, this is the man I told you about.”
“I gathered that,” Sarah murmured.
Michael saw the discomfort on her face immediately.
“I owe your daughter a thank-you,” he said.
“You already thanked her.”
“Not properly.”
Sarah became guarded.
“We don’t need anything.”
Michael nodded once.
“I know.”
The answer surprised her.
He did not produce an envelope.
He did not offer money.
He did not turn Emily’s kindness into a performance.
Instead he said, “Your daughter behaved with more awareness than most of the adults on that bus.
