“Why would they harass you?”
He did not answer.
Lauren stepped away from the podium and came toward me.
Her smile returned, but now it trembled at the edges.
“Rachel, please.
We are sisters.
Tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
Ten minutes earlier, I had been her family disappointment.
Now I was her sister.
I closed the black folder.
“A misunderstanding does not authenticate itself with a commander’s credentials six times over three weeks.”
Evan’s expression hardened.
“Six times?”
“The first access occurred while you were deployed.
The next four happened after midnight from your home network.
The sixth began tonight.”
Lauren turned toward him.
“Someone stole your password.”
“My password changes every seventy-two hours.”
“Then Rachel did it.
She has people who can do things like that.”
The accusation hung in the ballroom.
My mother inhaled sharply, not because Lauren’s claim made sense, but because accusing me had always been the family’s fastest way to restore order.
When a vase broke, I had distracted Lauren.
When Lauren failed a class, I had made her feel insecure.
When she insulted a guest, I had provoked her.
Their version of peace required my guilt.
The lead agent opened a second folder.
“The credentials were entered correctly on the first attempt each time,” he said.
“Multifactor approval was completed from Commander Whitaker’s registered tablet.”
Evan looked at Lauren.
“The tablet in my desk?”
She folded her arms.
“You leave it everywhere.
Anyone could have used it.”
“The desk was locked.”
“You gave me the key.”
The moment she said it, she froze.
The room seemed to contract around her.
Evan spoke carefully.
“I gave you the key for emergencies.”
Lauren’s chin lifted.
“And I never used it.”
“You just said anyone could have used the tablet.
Now you are admitting you had the only other key.”
“That is not what I said.”
“It is exactly what you said.”
Her eyes moved desperately toward our parents.
My mother hurried forward.
“Evan, she is frightened.
Do not twist her words.”
He looked at my mother as though seeing her clearly for the first time.
“I am not twisting anything.
Someone entered my office, accessed classified procurement material, and used my identity to do it.”
My father placed himself beside Lauren.
“She would never betray her husband.”
