“You can stop.”
“No.” Evelyn swallowed against the pain.
“I have stopped too many times.”
She told him about the accounts Daniel had frozen after she questioned an investment.
She told him about the driver who reported every trip she made.
She told him how Daniel apologized after each cruel outburst, buying jewelry she never wore and flowers she was expected to display.
Then she described the previous evening.
She had found documents in Daniel’s home office connecting his clinic investment to a scheme that billed patients for procedures they had never received.
Several complaints had disappeared after private settlements.
Evelyn photographed the records with an old phone Daniel did not know she still owned.
Daniel caught her in the kitchen.
He demanded the phone.
She refused.
“He grabbed my arm,” she said.
“I pulled away.
He shoved me into the marble island.”
Raffael’s face did not change, but his voice became quieter.
“Once?”
She looked down.
“Twice.”
The second impact dropped her to the floor.
When she began bleeding, Daniel searched her pockets for the old phone.
He could not find it because she had slipped it beneath a loose floor panel near the pantry weeks earlier.
“He told me no one would believe me,” Evelyn whispered.
“Then he left me there while he called the clinic.”
Raffael understood the rest.
Daniel had arranged for his own clinic to dismiss her symptoms in case she managed to seek treatment.
If she died at home later, he could describe it as a tragic medical event after she refused care.
But Evelyn had escaped.
And she had called the one person Daniel could not intimidate.
“Is the old phone still beneath the floor?” Raffael asked.
“Yes.”
“May I tell the police where to find it?”
The question surprised her.
He waited.
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
Only then did he call Vincent.
By sunrise, detectives had secured the townhouse.
Beneath the pantry floor, they found the phone wrapped in a dish towel.
It contained photographs of the clinic records, messages showing Daniel pressuring employees to alter files, and an audio recording Evelyn had accidentally started when he confronted her.
His voice could be heard demanding the phone.
Then came the sound of the first impact.
Evelyn crying out.
Daniel saying, “You should have stayed out of my business.”
The second impact followed.
The recording ended with his final warning.
“No one will believe you.”
At the hospital, Daniel continued performing the role of concerned husband.
He demanded updates.
He threatened lawsuits.
He called members of the hospital board and insisted Raffael was holding Evelyn against her will.
Then two detectives stepped from the elevator.
Daniel’s confidence returned when he saw them.
“Finally,” he said.
“That man has interfered with my wife’s care and stolen private records.”
